Barbara,
There are a number of museums around that have these exhibits. The ones
at the Arizona Science Center are very nice ones. Ones I tried at the
Louisiana Children's Museum may have needed some maintenance. They were
dragging quite a bit.
There is probably one exhibit company or another that has made these
things for several museums, as Paul O suggests. I'd be happy to
recommend one if you'd like to write off list.
Let me give one other piece of advice that comes to mind regarding
maintenance. If the museum you're working for does not have the
infrastructure or the commitment to perform regular maintenance on
exhibits, this is not the exhibit for them. This one, when made well is
very reliable, but when something starts to go wrong it needs to be
dealt with right away or someone could get hurt. I am starting to face
this more and more with museums asking me to build exhibits for them
which they cannot possibly hope to maintain, or wouldn't even know that
something needed to be taken care of in the first place. Questions like
'What's an Allen key?' accompanied by a blank expression are a sure sign
that the people you're dealing with can not handle anything more
mechanically complicated than a wooden puzzle.
