In Principle, In Practice: A Learning Innovation Initiative

November 7-8, 2004 - Annapolis, MD

Organized by the Institute for Learning Innovation with funding from the
National Science Foundation (ESI 0318868)

In Principle, In Practice: A Learning Innovation Conference will gather
a diverse set of stakeholders (practitioners, evaluators, researchers,
policy makers, and funders) to reflect upon the findings of the last
decade's research on learning in and from museums. The goal of this
working conference is to collaboratively develop frameworks for
improving practice, evaluation, and future learning research efforts in
the science museum community.

The conference represents one component of the In Principle, In
Practice: A Learning Innovation Initiative. This Initiative includes a
pre-conference publication, as well as a post-conference white paper and
book. The pre-conference publication will be a supplemental issue of the
journal Science Education that consists of a collection of peer-reviewed
articles describing understandings of museum learning that have emerged
over the last decade.

The conference will be held at the Historic Inns of Annapolis
(Annapolis, MD) and will begin with a reception the evening of November
6, 2004. Conference costs and lodging for all participants will be
provided. With the exception of a few people who have already been
identified because of their leadership in the field, conference
participants will be recruited and selected through an open application
process.

Applications are available at www.ilinet.org and are due by June 30,
2004. Applicants will be notified of their participation by the end of
July 2004. The final pool of participants will be balanced in terms of
geography, the size and type of institution, and type of stakeholder
represented. All conference participants will be expected to prepare for
active involvement in the conference and assist in the dissemination of
conference findings and implications.
