Nikki asks how the value of milk was assessed for the GNP. I am not sure it
is done every year, actually, but I could find out.
We know how many babies are born, and approximately how many BF-months women
contribute per year. But I don't know whether the figure is based simply on
an estimate of what it would cost to supply all these babies with breastmilk
substitutes, or whether the savings in the health services are figured into
the equation somehow. The savings to employers due to less maternal
absenteeism for childrens' illness are marginal, since most BF mothers are
on paid maternity leave already.
