I made a follow-up visit to a client of mine today 5 weeks after our
original consult. Her initial problem was a 37 weeker, very tiny and sleepy
whom she couldn't get latched. Baby has gone from 6lbs 4 oz to 10lbs 7 oz
in the month since I saw them exclusively bfg, and is doing great. However,
mom had a housefull of stressful company over the last weekend and overdid.
She has a lot of milk, and a baby who clenches to protect from too-rapid
milk flow, so the combination of spotty engorgement in her more copiously
producing breast and fatigue hit her like a ton of bricks. Mom got
seriously ill two nights ago with fever of 103 degrees and had to go to the
emergency room. As she related the experience to me, she mentioned how
grateful she was that the ER doctor mentioned that she herself had had
mastitis, and was very aware how to treat. She started appropriate
antibiotics, for the appropriate length of treatment, and warned her not to
stop nursing, etc. It was heartening to the mom and to me. I think it is a
sign of real progress when not just OBs and peds and family practice docs
can help moms with bfg related issues.
