Reporting in from Norway: I am not aware of any term baby here ever having
been treated for reflux. Mothers do use ibuprofen or naprosyn for
afterpains, and for incision pain after CS, though rarely over more than a
very few days. Babies sleep on their backs here, almost universally. More
and more parents are using car seats outside the car, to carry babies in,
though I see nearly as many who use the bag that fits in the pram (I live in
a SERIOUS pram country - there are still people here who go for walks and
even walk to the grocery store and prams are great for carting your things
home in).
There is currently about 99% uptake of the offer of a routine ultrasound
scan at 18 weeks, for dates, placentation, and number of fetuses, and many
many women have several scans, before and after 18 weeks.
Most parents I see don't strike me as particularly fearful, though certainly
anxiety/depression are widespread here as they are in most of the world.
I see a lot of babies who spit up, too. We never consider it a medical
problem unless the baby is losing weight. Can't recall ever having seen
that, actually, except when it was attributable to some artifact of feeding,
like EBM being bottle-fed, eliminating the fine tuning of fat content. As
long as the family has a washing machine, we don't consider spitting up to
be a problem per se.
I don't know what the situation is for premature babies as I don't follow
many of them. I do know they are expected to ingest amounts that would
challenge the capacity of most term babies, and I am SO glad it isn't me
that has to get these volumes into them.
Anecdotal note: my son consistently spit up when placed prone as an infant.
He was born before the 'back to sleep' era. Never spit up when lying on his
back nor in his bucket-style car seat, but every time he was placed on his
stomach, he would have gooey white eyebrows when I picked him up.
Just my 30 ml!
