He probably wouldn't have minded, as he didn't much care for the flute
himself.

I know what you mean (I feel similarly about his violin concertos), but
a really fine performance can still do it: there's a Rosbaud-conducted
Flute & Harp Concerto on I forget which label, which is just wonderful.
