Karen, you asked about a stainless steel implant left in the breast after
biopsy. It is becoming more common to do this. The stainless steel easily shows
up on future diagnostic tests and quickly alerts the radiologist reading that
test (who may not be the same person as the radiologist who read the
original) that the area of the breast with the stainless steel needs particular care
in reading. It lets them more easily compare what's going on in the current
pictures with what seen in earlier pictures if the radiologist knows exactly
where to look. (Of course, it's not meant to allow the radiologist to skip
looking at the rest of the breast!)
