Can anyone help me out with some references? Maybe Peter Hartman might have
this in his data base if someone can get me in touch with him.
How much colostrum is needed per feeding on day one to stabilize an infant's
blood sugar? How much on day two?
Has there ever been any research that looks at this?
In our hospital too many babies, either term or premature that have to be
supplemented in the first two days because of low blood sugars or the fear that
the blood sugars will not stay stable on colostrum alone.
It is sooooooooooooooo frustrating. I can express droplets of colostrum on
baby's lips but only occasionally can I get them to latch and suckle well on
demand in this time period. But with these droplets entering the baby's mouth
not be enough to stabilize them?
Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks,
Ann Perry RN IBCLC
