I thought this might be Vermont. My (breastfed) son just graduated from
Univ.of Vermont (UVM) in Burlington, a wonderful university town on
beautiful Lake Champlain.Church St.is the main shopping/social plaza.Folks
with different socio-economic ideologies mix there.UVM was described on the
front page of the local paper last summer as "#1 in birkenstock wearing,
clove smoking, tree hugging vegetarians."There is a music/arts culture
of "progressive" families there, too. There may be more to this than we can
see from the article. Perhaps the student is voicing his discomfort with
people who are different from himself.Perhaps he has a different world view
from some folks he sees on Church Street.(There is also a Take Back Vermont
Movement.)Of course, breastfeeding is becoming universal, and kindly
responding will help bridge alot of gaps.Trends that change society have
fore runners and those who follow. Maybe the health teachers need some
resources. My other son is a junior at UVM,and my daughter will likely
follow (what does that say about our family?) so I could help out on
visits, if needed.Could he relate to the suggestion that he take his meals
in a washroom? How healthy, etc does he want his children to be? It's a
golden oppurtunity to reach out to the whole school district. I saw a
healthy school lunch/recycling project underway in the paper there last
month. Networking with those folks might be good. Vermonters love locally
grown milk!:) Judy
