You're not alone Gretchen.  I have a hard time with Rorem too.  I
sometimes think that his reputation rests more on his insufferable diaries
than his music.  At any rate, there is one piece that I find very moving,
and that is the War Scenes, written as a Viet Nam protest and performed
splendidly by the late Donald Gramm.
