I like to use an analogy I think I read here on Lactnet.

If you bake bread, there are lots of factors that are going to affect how it turns out - the humidity, the amount of kneading, etc, and every loaf will turn out differently because there are so many contributing factors (just like each of us will turn out differently). But you can be sure that if you don't add yeast, it'll be "edible" but will never rise as high as it could have and never achieve its full potential. Similarly, those unlucky babies who were formula fed may be "okay", but will never be the VERY BEST they could be. I know I sure could use those 8 extra IQ points sometimes.

This is a very poignant point to me, as I was artificially fed 32 years ago and I am most certainly not "fine." (two autoimmune diseases, neither of which ran in the family).
