I agree with Jeanette that for the first several days, up to the first week,
the parents should think of their baby's age by hours old not days.  When I
see mothers in the hospital I always ask when the baby was born, which includes
the time and day.  Then I talk to them regarding the baby's age by hours.  I
think this is also very important for the staff to realize and I will point
this out if they start to push the panic button.
