I have studied the IBLCE Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice regarding
the issue to IBCLC’s providing drug information to mothers seeking
information about it’s compatibility with breastfeeding. I am a non-medical
IBCLC living in a country that does not recognise the credential (although
loves to reap the benefits of our work) hence I am unable to obtain a local
Ministry of Health licence to practice. I am interested to hear about other
IBCLC’s practice and how they see the issue of drug information fitting in
with the professional standards and codes we observe.
Other IBCLC’s with licences work out of general clinics/hospital settings
here...is there a difference in their ability to give out said information
because of their health background or because they are IBCLC’s in a clinical
setting? This issue has become a pressing one due to the numbers of HCP’s
and pharmacists directing mothers to wean, and phone calls for requests for
“second opinions” have been increasing.
While an understanding of drug transfer is a vital part of the Exam
Blueprint should IBCLC’s with non-prescribing status-peer counsellor
IBCLC’s, registered nurse IBCLC’s etc give out drug information to
facilitate informed patient consent? I am not getting a clear indication of
the IBCLC’s role in this situation. I am more interested in insight based on
the Code and the S o P’s or other IBLCE documents than anecdotal information
so that my stance is as valid and defensible as possible.
Many thanks,
Meg Kingsley IBCLC Dubai UAE
