VDOT and the Highway Research Council did an inventory of bridges. Due
to the NRHP criteria of integrity of place, they left off the list
those which were known to have been moved. It was then discovered that
the oldest one in VA was one of those which had been moved. More
research showed that lots of them were not in their original locations
and some had been moved multiple times. Some of this resulted in the
construction of piers and approach ramps which didn't fit the terrain
properly and were puzzling until one looked at the situation critically.

The HRC director related a story of going to a metal truss bridge which
was being demolished. On top of it was an idiot whanging away with a
sledge hammer at the top connector pin. He'd already removed most of
the stays and turnbuckles. It was pointed out the consequences of
removing that particular pin. Whanging stopped.
