I can tell you where I live very few would be happy to do this. When you
tell them most babies need to eat AT LEAST 8 times in 24 hours they sometimes
gasp until we explain how many times we as adults are grapping meals, snacks,
drinks, etc, and we AREN'T trying to double our weight!

Our moms are worried about getting to the hairdresser, the nail salon,
entertaining, etc. Now having said this we are seeing our mothers nursing
longer and getting help. We try to work with what is within their world. If
I told them nursing 100 times a day is normal and left it at that they would
give up breastfeeding in a second. So we have learned to pull these women
along in their world so their babies will get breastmilk for as long as
possible. We tell them reality and what babies need and then we see what is
workable in their world. They call a lot for support. And some come to our
group meetings. Many of these women do really fantastic and find that
breastfeeding wasn't inconvenient at all!

When I teach prenatal classes the gasping that goes on as I explain New Born
Behavior and breastfeeding is unbelievable! I write down the great books
they all need to purchase, give them websites to go to, and then try to get
their jaws up off of the floor because I just repeated the AAP policy
statement on breastfeeding. Explaining AT LEAST one year is the
recommendation. They almost fall off of their chairs when I tell them what
WHO says! ha! Of course I tell them one feeding at a time, one day at a
time and then repeat some personal stories of other moms. Like one of our
OB/GYN's who said she would nurse for 3 mo and ended up nursing for 18 mo.
They all get quiet and start listening.

In my hospital we have a mixture of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
But we have the majority "Yuppies" who have their own ideas in their fast
paced world
