Once again, I thank Richard Pennycuick for his listing of new Naxos
offerings. The two that most grabbed my attention are Volume 4 of
Scheidemann organ works and the Miaskovsky/Vainberg Violin Concerto
coupling.

That concerto coupling looks like a great program. I've been getting
into both composers in recent years and am always glad to see new discs
of their music.

Concerning the Scheidemann disc, it's about time that a new volume
is coming out. I have the previous three and was wondering if the
series had stalled for some reason. For those not familiar with
Scheidemann, he lived during the period that greater freedom from rigid
musical forms was starting to evolve into what is commonly referred to
as the "Stylus Phantasticus" that is exemplified by the music of Buxtehude.
When we look at Bach's organ music, we might wonder where it came from.
Well, just go back to the days of Cabezon and Sweelinck, then listen to
Weckmann/Scheidt/Scheidemann, then move on to Buxtehude, and you'll
notice a progression of structural freedom and elasticity that culminated
in these styles being incorporated into Bach's organ music. Scheidemann
is one of the historical keys to Bach's music in addition to having
composed some absolutely fantastic organ works.

I just have one question. Does anyone know who the organist is on Volume
4?
