I heard Lang Lang play in Tucson, AZ, last week. I found his performance
to be technically excellent, but uninvolving. It may have been due to
the choice of pieces in some cases (for example, Schumann's Op. 1
variations), but not all (a performance of a Chopin Nocturne that was,
to my ears, rather antiseptic). The strange thing is that, visually, he
gives the impression of being deeply moved by his own performance. The
cynical might think him a good showman. But perhaps he was just having
an off night, and perhaps he'll put more into the Tan Dun premiere.

The most interesting part of the evening was when he was joined by his
father, who plays erhu (two-stringed Chinese violin). I'd attend any
performance by his father in a heartbeat.
