Speaking of the Bach Magnificat, it reminded me that Telemann and
Graupner both wrote Magnificats for their applications for the Cantorship
in Leipzig 6 months prior to Bach's final appointment to the job. I am
not sure, but I don't believe Bach's Magnificat was a "audition piece."
I'll have to double check my copy of Wolf's biography to be sure though.

Telemann used his application as a leverage for a raise in Hamburg; and
a free reign at composing opera at the Goose Market Opera House. Grauper's
prince refused to release him (but did give him a significat salary
increase).

I know the Graupner Magnificat has been published, and I *believe* it
has been recorded--although I haven't heard it yet. I think it would
be wonderful to have a 2 CD anthology set of all three composers in a
Paul McCreesh recreation of a liturical performance setting. Well for
that matter, I would love to see much more of Grauper's music recorded.
