Donna, you're right, it is a problem mom. It is so
frustrating to work with moms, give them all the best
advice, and then see them ignore it all and listen to
their family who have no experience with
breastfeeding. I am sure that the ped will give them a
big talking to today. I am betting that the baby will
be slightly jaundiced at least, and probably just
barely hanging on to discharge weight unless mom's milk
is just cream. The lack of scoopbable poops is a red
flag. If they were to see our docs today, they would
have the holy bejeesus scared out of them and be
ordered to supplement (one doc is not very patient with
bf mom-"sigh") or given an earnest talk and then sent
down the hall to talk to me.

The way I explain it to parents of sleepy babies who
aren't gaining weight is that they have babies with
easy going dispositions so they don't fuss, but give
subtle cues to hunger. They are sleepy as they are
conserving energy because they aren't getting enough.
I tell them they have to feed them on a regular
frequent basis until they "pick up steam". If they
listen, I get the report back at the next weight check
in 2 days that the baby is having more seedy stool, and
waking to demand feeding. I just hope your mom gets
a doc like my second one.
