Jon Gallant's mention of Musik zu einem Ritterball reminded me of
a Beethoven work that was overappreciated. I've just dug out a 10"
DG LP containing "Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony in C Major (Jena)",
probably recorded in the late 1950s. A musicologist found the score in
Jena, Germany, and concluded that it was an early symphony by Beethoven.
It certainly sounds like him. Robbins Landon later discovered another
copy, and the work was eventually attributed to Friedrich Witt. I haven't
heard it for years nor do I know of any other recordings of it, but I
remember it as being on a par with symphonies by other composers of the
period.
