Jan Thuis responds to me:

>>The elevation of Tan Dun would be a severe blow to classical music as
>>we presently perceive it.
>
>But who is the 'we' which is being mentioned? Do I unknowingly
>belong to a perceiving group? (Unconsciously perhaps?) Am I
>(as part of us) in danger of losing something? These blows, are they
>dangerous?

Leaving aside the witty and light-hearted questions, my premise simply
concerns the possibility of a particular category of music being absorbed
by another category and losing its individuality.

Mr. Thuis seems to consider the proposition absurd, and the future will
reveal if he is correct. As for whether Mr. Thuis is one of "us", he can
rest easy; he's only one of us if he wants to be.
