I'm not positive, but think it was 1998 - just after they celebrated
49 years on the air and were looking forward to the 50th anniversary.
I believe it started in 1949.  It was replaced by several rock-type
stations (at least 3 different ones) and recently was taken over by
a local educational TV station.

Temple University - WRTI - now provides classical music from 6am to 6pm
and jazz from 6 pm to 6am to the Phila.  area.  They also air some opera
and concerts on the weekends.
