As a general rule, >all< 20/1C musical cultures tend to be more
supportive of other people's music than their own; although there may
be local factors that make USAmericans more inclined to this self-neglect
than other cultures.  The ground level support in England for their own
music hasn't translated into Bax at the Proms, for eg; & the looks you
can get collecting Chinese music in the PRC & Hong Kong are priceless.
The average Australian would struggle to name a dozen Australian classical
composers; & the composers who achieved the greatest respect in Japan
were those who were deemed to be not Japanese in style (TAKEMITSU Toru,
most strikingly).

At this point, i'm tempted to launch into the Lord High Executioner's
little list; but that's enough for now.
