Bless you for those few sensible words.  The Gramophone is totally geared
to its advertisers.  Small companies do not get their products reviewed
unless they pay for advertisements.  Most of the reviewers sit on the
fence and it is necessary to try and read between the lines to find out
the truth.  One invariably reads that each new version of a piece is the
best ever!

I so much wanted to write and answer the original questioner but as I
write for American Record Guide, this was simply not possible.  We have
bound volumes of the Gramophone from its very first issue in the twenties.
I really do not know why we still continue to take the wretched thing.
