I like to spend some time to visualise for these moms what happens and make
them understand that truely giving themselves to their baby will improve
latch and instantly reduce pain.
I mirror to them their body-stature when they are planning to latch the baby
on while they expect pain: mom will hold baby at some distance from her body,
curl her shoulders forward, while pulling her chest towards her spine. I then
show/explain that the only thing the baby can do is grab as much of the
nipple as he can and hold on to it with his gums. This hurts, mom pulls
further back, etc.
Then I explain that breastfeeding is an act of giving. In Dutch the word for
breastfeeding always comes with a form of ''to give'' (Like "I give
breastfeeding") and when you give something to someone you stick it forward,
you present it. (perhaps in English there is a possibility to use something
like "to present a present") In the mean time I rmember mom how she learned
to breathe in her childbirth class and have her do that kind of deep relaxing
breathing before and while presenting her breast to her child. All of it
combined with some hands and body posture guiding to create the prerequisits
for optimal latch

Warmly greeting,

Gonneke
