I don't recall the details of the study, and I dont' have a reference..some
of the other Lactnetters out there might...but there is at least one study
out there that studied the difference between premature babies, one group of
whom recieved breastmilk through some kind of feeding tube,,and the other
formula through the feeding tube. There was a significant IQ difference
between the two groups, and it eliminated the effect of the breastfeeding
experience on the baby. If i recall the difference wasn't as great as
between formula fed and directly fed infants, but I think it was still
significant. Does anyone else recall this study?

Someone responded with an anecdote about a Mom of a 7wk old beginning weaning
but who changes her mind and plans to pump some milk for the 9mths. specified
 in the study.
This is all well and good but my response to her would be; how do you know
that the benefit (in terms of IQ advantage) comes from the *breast milk* only
and not from the (physiologically complex) process of brfdng?
If we reduce this *process* to simply a liquid placed in a can, then we make
the job of duplicating it a whole lot easier for the formula
 companies....(whoa-WHO do I sound like? ;0)
 grrrrrr.......
