Hi Katherine,
A book I have found useful is 'Converting the Wilderness: The Art of
Gardening in Colonial Australia' by Australian Gallery Directors Council
(c) Australian Gallery Directors Council 1979 and Howard Tanner. (Langridge
Press, Sydney). The publication is nicely illustrated and covers both grand
and small gardens. You may be able to get a copy through interlibrary loan.
