I have searched the archives of Lactnet to no avail, and found a little bit
in Lawrence about infant swollen nipples immediately postpartum. I know
that estrogen and progesterone levels rise during pregnancy to encourage
growth of alveoli, lobes, and breast tissue. Also that hormones will be in
small quantities in human milk.

The question:

mom is 10 weeks pregnant
20 month old nursing daughter Weighs 25 pounds whose nipples have turned a
deep pink and to swell, and is different from the swelling of a newborn's
nipples. Up until yesterday her nipples were skin tone and flat. Nipple
is more like a woman's soft nipple with an indentation in the centre. One
nipple when pressed seems to have a small bead shape in it. The other nipple
looks almost bruised. There is no discharge. The baby does not appear to be
bothered by the change. The baby has no allergies. Nurses 7 times total per
day and night.

She had a constant running nose (sounds like allergies to me but I digress)
from end of Oct. to end of Feb. and was
given antibiotics in November. She was teething that whole time.

The regional health nurse thought it might be hormone related ; the Mother
Risk line asked her why she is nursing while pregnant?! so she contacted
me
for help.

Do you think this is hormone related?

thanks for your help,

Michelle Bentley
