In limbo since November, when it ran out of money and suspended operations,
the San Jose Symphony is expected to announce after its May 15 board
meeting that the orchestra will officially "go dark" for an undetermined
period and, likely, declare bankruptcy as well.

The advisory panel recommendation - certain to be accepted, for lack of
alternatives - mentions six months as a possibility, a number that appears
as wholly unrealistic, in face of the organization's $3 million-plus debt.

And so, California's oldest orchestra - in the second-largest city of
a state, which has the world's sixth largest economy - will be no more.
Instead of a requiem for itself, the orchestra will play happier music
at a still-scheduled fund-raiser in June.
