Ellen didn't mention the exact location of the diagonal bruises, but
from what she did describe, I strongly suspect baby is latching too high
on the breast. (Moms are always surprised when I look at a nipple with
such a bruise and tell them what position they had been using to
nurse.) I would suggest, if you haven't already done so, working on
getting baby's lower jaw much further on to the breast. Start out by
aiming the nipple as if you were going to put it up the baby's nose.
Hold the baby so she/he is tilting its head upward slightly to reach the
breast. Get the lower jaw WAY back on the breast and then bring the
breast into baby's mouth at the last split second before the mouth
closes. I find it helpful to describe it to the mom as being very much
like the way most people take a bite out of a thick sandwich or a large
apple (can't remember where I first heard this analogy, but it really
hits the nail on the head). People generally tilt the sandwich upward ,
get the lower jaw well on to the sandwich, and then tip it into the
mouth.
Forgive me, ellen, if this is old info for you. Just like I tell moms,
I'd rather repeat something you know than miss something you hadn't
heard before.
Good luck with this case.
Winnie
