Thanh-Tam Le (thanks for your comments about French opera singing) quoted
me thusly:

>>Yet, curiously enough, I rarely have that
>>problem with German operas. That is, even though it is not my native
>>language, I find that it is usually sung clearly enough, whether by
>>German-speaking or non-German-speaking singers, that I can at least tell
>>what words are being sung.

I find I must amend that slightly, after listening to the Met broadcast of
Die Fledermaus last weekend; I did find a lot of the pronunciation in that
performance rather muddy (especially on the parts of the sopranos). But
since most of the arias in this work are taken at a great clip, I suppose
that is to be expected. By the way, I thought the English dialogue bits
were very enjoyably written and performed. A very nice way to start the
year.
