Grace,
Welcome to motherhood, to lactnet, and to the world of breastfeeding
support. And isn't toddler nursing fun? You should carefully document and
have a supervisor sign your peer counselor hours and probably keep a brief
description of the bf scenarios that you've counseled about. You should
contact [log in to unmask] and visit www.iblce.org to begin to get info about
becoming an ibclc. There are many pathways. some university programs and
some distance learning pathways have been mentioned recently which strictly
are pathways to lactation consulting. This may sound pessimistic, but with
an uncertain LC job market you may want to consider an associate or
baccaulaureate degree program in some other area you would be interested.
Not necessarily nursing school - (what about nutrition, OT assistant, child
life therapy, etc) and add on your lactation hours/c.e. Especially if you
need a decent income. When you get the iblce brochure you will understand
the different pathways. Not to be morbid, but sometimes husbands become ill,
disabled, or die, unfortunately. Sometimes the mommies have to go to work.
