Let us not forget the quaint 19th century custom of relocating battlefield
remains and leaving the backdirt in small mounds. For many years, those
little mounds at Custer Battlefield were called "buddy graves" under the
eroneous assumption that each represented a grave of the two guys who shared
a tent half. The haphazard nature of battlefields makes detection difficult.
