Don't know about Tucson, but here in Galveston we had a popular nightclub
and gambling establishment called the Sui Jen (pronounced, I think,
"Swee-Ren") that had a Japanese motif. On Monday, December 8, 1941 it
closed for remodelling and reopened a few days later with
hurriedly-bought, cheap bamboo and paper decorations, rechristened the
"Balinese Room." The structure, built out on a pier over the Gulf of
Mexico, still stands, although it's been vacant for many years and
appears perenially on the verge of collapse. (List content: future site
for historic archaeology.)
