Clearly you puritanic Americans are just not used to pornographic pottery
and artefacts. The phallic pot sounds quite mild compared to the
prornographic tiles published in Post-Med Arch a few years back- I believe a
lawyer was consulted. The content of which suggests the London pot may well
have had a dual purpose in a brothel ie not just for drinking. Geoff Egan
also showed me some smashed (by the London Customs) porcelain slides for
some sort of light box showing exquisitely moulded figures in C18 costume
doing naughty things- ?? made in France in the C19. Somewhere someone must
have some complete ones. Also found where smashed C19 claypipes with naked
women entwined around them. However, my favourite are the medieval spout
jugs with a phallic spout supported by a moulded arm and hand and a smiling
face above- do i have to spell it out. However, this is all quite mild
compared to Roman pornographic art. Catherine Johns of the BM gives (or use
to) a lecture on the subject in which she insisted on keeping the lights on
so the audience can't hide their reactions. Anyway I must return to less
thrilling arcaheological tasks.

An amused Paul Courtney
