Barbara,
I have long considered Baby Talk magazine as nothing more than landfill. I
saw this most recent issue while in my doctor's office and I was really
dismayed. The article you speak of not only makes the breast/ bottle
feeding combination look like the way to go... it also maligns IBCLCs as
radicals who think formula is never appropriate. There is a story told
about a mom who was told by the LC not to supplement the baby even though
he was crying and hungry all the time, then the pediatrician stepped in and
told the mom to give a bottle.... thus rescuing her from this mean LC!
I am disgusted and discouraged! It is bad enough when some unknowledgable
freelance writer like this BabyTalk author maligns us but......
As for the NANN statement. As you may be aware, NAPNAP recently came out
with a very positive statement about breastfeeding. Those of us who are
CPNs or PNPs and also IBCLCs are fully aware that this does not happen
because the organization has forsight. If you are a member of NANN, and you
are concerned about their behavior you MUST make noise! That's the only way
to get Baby Friendly statements!!!
Shame on NANN for failing to behave in a professional and research based
manner!
