Educated medieval men -- Jews, Arabs, and Christians -- frequently believed
that celibacy improved their minds and characters; in some cases also that it
increased their chance of ultimate spiritual salvation.

Again, the power of culture -- people have thought a lot of different things
over time, and the stuff some people think today is not intrinsic to human
nature, by any means.
