SHA AWARDS 2002 IN MOBILE, ALABAMA

The Society for Historical Archaeology and its Awards Committee are pleased
to announce the following honors to be presented in January
2002 at the SHA Annual Meeting in Mobile, Alabama. President Douglas
V. Armstrong will present the following awards during the conference:

J.C. HARRINGTON AWARD

The Harrington Medal for 2002 will be presented to:

                CHARLES E. CLELAND

Cleland is a leading researcher on the historical archaeology of the
Great Lakes-Midwest region having worked on a wide range of sites. He
has especially contributed to our understanding of the contact period
in North America. He has been equally important as an educator
having spent over thirty years at Michigan State University producing
a small army of graduate students in our discipline. Finally, Chuck
Cleland has also made an equal and third contribution as an active leader
in several scholarly organizations including SOPA and the SHA (President
1973).


SHA AWARDS OF MERIT

There will be three SHA Awards of Merit presented in Mobile which will
go to the:

(1) ALABAMA HISTORICAL COMMISSION

        This agency has been instrumental in advancing the interests of historical
archaeology in the state. Since 1966 the AHC has not only
been at the center of preservation of historic sites but has actively
supported archaeological research on these sites. The Commission has
also been very successful in introducing historical archaeology into
its public education programs.

(2) JUDITH A. BENSE

        Judith Bense, of the University of West Florida, has built an
exceptional record over the last two decades involving an unusual
ability to successfully combine field research, local governmental
support and public outreach. She has made significant discoveries
and contributions to our understanding of Spanish colonialism and
the early American period in the Southeast but also has consistently opened
this scholary research and its findings to the people of Pensacola and the
Gulf Coast.

(3)  ANITA COHEN-WILLIAMS

        Anita Cohen-Williams is being honored for her creation,
management and building of the www list service, HISTARCH. This
contribution to the field has revolutionized the ability of historical
archaeologists to communicate on a world-wide level. The list, which
was founded in 1994, now has between 800 and 900 subscribers in
35 different countries and covers all aspects of historical
archaeology ranging from artifact identification to the broadest
questions of theory.

JOHN L. COTTER AWARD IN HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY

The third cycle of nominations is now open and the selection, to
be honored in Mobile, will be announced in the late Fall.
