I'm sure this topic has been addressed before, but a search has not come up
with any answers. I received a call from a mother of three children. Her
youngest, which is 14 months old, refuses solids. The mother does not have
a problem with this, but the child, for the past month, has increased her
nursing to every hour, including at night. The mother is extremely
fatigued. This child, as were the other two children, is described as being
high need. The mother practices attachment parenting. The ped, a father of
8 children, (who also were bf for several years), does not see a problem
with the development or weight of this baby, although she is in the lower
10% for weight. She has reached her milestones at appropriate times. She
is currently teething also. The mother is not interested in weaning, but
would like to attempt to decrease the amount of nursings and somehow get
the baby to eat some solids. She maintains that she spends a lot of time
with the baby when she is not nursing her, but does admit to having a
hectic lifestyle. I copied the suggestions from Dr. Sears' website
regarding getting a picky toddler to eat, sleeping through the night, etc.,
and gave her the book Attachment Parenting. The husband is very
supportive, and is not unhappy with the situation. His answer is that the
other children were that way, and they are such wonderful children (can we
clone him?). The problem is mainly that the mother needs a break because
the baby nurses constantly around the clock. Any suggestions?
Warmly,
