The idea that nursing brings of thoughts of a nurse as opposed to a baby at
breast made me smile and remember my first child. The OB sat me down to
inform me I was indeed pregnant and to discuss things with me. First, he
informed I was no longer a smoker and to hand over my cigarettes, which I
obeyed. Then he asked if I had considered nursing. Me, the stupid woman I
was, answered, NO, I hate the sight of blood. (boy I was soooooo stupid
then.) When he told me he meant feed the baby at my breast I about choked!!
I had never heard of such a thing ( I was 24, and had NEVER seen a baby
breastfeed and as much as I knew about sex (which was more than enough, haha)
I had no clue babies could actually get milk from breasts. I knew we had
breasts, obviously, I knew for some reason after birth they dry up the milk
with drugs and binding. My sister did this. So, it never occurred to me I
would do different. Actually, if my OB had not insisted I read more and give
it serious consideration, and if my hubby had not been from Italy where
nursing was the norm and he insisted I would give his chid the "very best" ,
well, I guess I would not be on this list at all. So, yep, maybe we better
think of more words to describe breastfeed for nurture as well as food.
Until then I still categorize many moms as feeders and nursers. Its a
generalization, but it helps me help them when I know where they are coming
from and what their goals are.

Pam MazzellaDiBosco, IBCLC Still not wanting to be nurse, but sure do love
                                                 nursing.
