Ellen, I agree with your gut reaction, and that is an opinion based on
current standards of practice.  If this baby is robust enough to be
subjected to diluted formulas, it should be getting its mother's milk, and
fast.  Great that the mother is pumping.  Now she needs to find a doctor who
is up to date and willing to TALK to her.

Who knows why the dehydration started, but the treatment as you describe it
sounds outdated at best and dangerous at worst.  Maybe baby was having pain
with feeds because of the thrush.
