I own--and have always enjoyed--the Bruckner 6th with Muti and the Berlin
Philharmonic on EMI. He brings a bel canto smoothness to the slower
passages, and, in the process, de-emphasizes many of the stops and starts
that make this piece such hard going for all but the most devoted and
patient Bruckner disciples. As a talented opera and choral conductor,
Muti also has a sense of the long line, so this performance is more than
an episodic series of brass explosions. And the playing of the BPO is
top-drawer throughout. I bought it after reading a rare review in Time
magazine, which praised Muti's lyrical approach in recommending this
performance for those who haven't warmed to Bruckner--or this symphony..

Perhaps too pretty and singing for some tastes, but certainly preferable
to many choppy recordings of the 6th that I've heard over the years.
