MKs (Members of Knesset)ask committee to rethink Barenboim ban

MK Dan Meridor, chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee,
and MK Amnon Rubinstein, chair of the Knesset State Control Committee, have
issued a joint appeal to MK Zevulun Orlev, head of the Knesset Education
Committee, to reconsider the Education Committee's decision to declare
Maestro Daniel Barenboim "persona non grata" in Israel.  Three members of
the panel voted to issue the ban on Barenboim last week in response to his
decision to conduct a piece by Richard Wagner during the Israel Festival.
Meridor and Rubinstein, said that even if Barenboim's "behavior was
inappropriate ...  he nonetheless has an important place in the cultural
history of Israel as the first internationally known pianist and conductor
from Israel." Orlev said he would reconsider the ban if the conductor
attended a session of Orlev's committee with representatives from the
various Holocaust survivor's organizations.

Rehabilitierung des Dirigenten Daniel Barenboim in Israel eingesetzt.
Barenboim besitze in der Kulturwelt des Landes einen festen Platz,
erklarten Dan Meridor und Amnon Rubinstein nach einem Bericht des
israelischen Rundfunks.  Der Erziehungsausschuss des Parlaments hatte
zum Boykott des Dirigenten wegen seiner umstrittenen Wagnerauffuhrung
Anfang Juli aufgerufen.

Barenboims guter Ruf konne auch durch sein 'unkorrektes Verhalten' mit
dem Spielen von Wagnerstucken wahrend des Israelfestivals nicht ruckgangig
gemacht werden, so die Parlamentarier weiter.  Zahlreiche Personlichkeiten
des offentlichen Lebens in Israel hatten sich fur Barenboim eingesetzt.
