It's hard to speak of a peculiarly American voice in CM before the 20th
century, but if you're looking for music of the period you may want to try
something by John Knowles Paine, or perhaps one of the symphonies by Ives
(which weren't too much later).  Since I don't know the play it's hard to
think of specific examples.
