"The Bourgeois Gentleman" by Richard Strauss. Plus, guitarists Sergio and
Odair Assad play music from the Enlightenment by Parisian composer
Jean-Philippe Rameau.

Debussy to compose one of his beloved pieces. Plus, a sampler of Debussy
performances from this summer's Bard Music Festival.

Hour 1 -- Haydn's last great work: We'll eavesdrop on the Berlin
Philharmonic, conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and a quartet of singers
including soprano Cecilia Bartoli in concert as they perform Haydn's
"Harmony" Mass No. 14 in B-flat.

Hour 2 -- Variations on the "Moonlight Sonata": Beethoven's Moonlight
Sonata turns 200 this year. Radio essayist Sara Fishko explores the
question of why even the most prominent pianists keep coming back to the
piece. We'll also hear a concert performance of the Moonlight Sonata by
pianist Kemal Gekic.

FRED CHILD IS HOST

Monday, SEPTEMBER 10

Hour 1 -- What Makes it So Great? Pianist, composer and conductor Robert
Kapilow joins Fred to explore great beginnings in music.

Hour 2 -- An hour for Anglophiles: Elgar's Symphonic Study "Falstaff" is
on the program from the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming. And Arnold
Bax's Elegiac Trio comes to us from the Virginia Waterfront International
Music Festival.

Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 11

Hour 1 -- How a life was changed at an orchestra concert: Conductor Thomas
Wilkins grew up in poverty, but the first time he heard an orchestra play
the Star-Spangled Banner, he knew what he wanted to do with his life.
He'll reflect on his compulsion to become a conductor and we'll hear him
lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Respighi's "Pines of Rome."

Hour 2 -- Coming to Terms with Tone Poems: PT answer-man Miles Hoffman
joins Fred to come to terms with a listener's question about the difference
between a tone poem and a symphonic poem. If there is one, that is.

Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 12

Baer tells Fred what's good about classical music on the web right now.
He points out a new site that has made deals with major orchestras to
broadcast concerts on demand.

Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra in a performance of the third movement
of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2.

KORVA COLEMAN IS HOST

Thursday, SEPTEMBER 13

Hour 1 -- Choosing that first instrument: Korva gets advice on how to
help children select their first instrument. And some leading classical
musicians tell their "my first instrument" stories. The lesson is, not
everyone gets it right the first time!

Hour 2 -- Basic Blockbusters: Some CDs are better than others--not just
from an artistic standpoint, but from a technical point of view. Ted
Libbey joins Korva to add some very high quality audio, not to mention
some pretty good music--to the Performance Today Record Library.

Grieg.
