Since you asked for input about considering what to say to a parent at a
very vulnerable time, I will have to admit the above wording sort of
"struck me in my gut".

I realize that when all is said and done, it means the same thing, but
how about that tried and true medical terminology "increases the risks",
or "places your baby at higher (or greater) risk" etc.

I guess this way it doesn't take away their hope that their baby will
escape those risks if they take their chances and feed formula.

Sort of an inversion of the reasoning in: "If I buy more lottery tickets,
I am at raising my risk of winning the jackpot."
