This case of a mom paying higher premiums is astonishing in so many ways.
In the most simple terms, how much do they think they will be out if in fact
her Mastitis does recur? In the scheme of things it is possibly an office
visit and prescription or just a prescription if managed by her physician
over the phone-$150 at the very most. Her increase in premiums will probably
cover several bouts of Mastitis. On the other hand one year of treatment
for breast cancer is about $30,000. What a strange gamble.
Recently someone who was working on insurance reimbursement issues told me
that the insurers are only interested in very short term outcomes. Most
people switch insurance plans and companies several times and the same
company cannot expect to benefit from preventive measures, so they are
motivated to reduce costs for each visit and limit number of visits.
