I wrote some time ago about a mom whose 1 year old baby was steadily
growing height in the 75th percentile but was off the charts in the weight
('too' light, but had been that way all the time). The mom had seen a nutr,
who claimed the breastmilk gets more watery over time, offers no energy to
a one year old, and in her energy intake calculations gave no value to
breastmilk. Thus, according to her calculation (which was incorrect because
breastmilk wasn't included), this baby received less than half of her daily
energy needs, and at the hospital a nurse told mom, that their focus from
now on is the malnutrition, not allergies (which was the original reason
mom searched for help). They even wanted to take the baby in to the
hospital to 'learn' to eat... (geez). Mom refused.

Anyway, the mom showed to her (supportive) pedi certain parts of the
Lawrence (like p. 89) and the Riordan & Auerbach, and the lower chart on
page 51 from the WHO publication "Complementary Feeding of Young Children
in Developing Countries" (the lower chart is about industrialized
countries, and James Akre was most helpful with it), and the pedi is now
willing to rule out possible illnesses behind the poor weight gain, and
continue to work with the allergies. Mom also booked an appointment with
another nutr (3-h drive!). Mom's very happy.

Unfortunately, I don't think this particular nutr changed her opinion at
all, and the next mom facing similar issues might not be as educated and as
strong as this mom.

Thank you so much for the support and ideas you gave, both in public and in
private messages.
