Trombones in Mozart's time were associated with church music. A trombone
quartet regularly was used to accompany congregational hymns, as is still
seen sometimes among the Moravians. That is why in DON GIOVANNI the
Statue's music includes trombones--the Commendatore has been sent to
pronounce divine judgement upon the Don.
