Why not Gulio Cesare by Handel? There is a stunning recording conducted
by Renee Jacobs on HM.  Look up the review on www.gramophone.co.uk.

A bit earlier, but for dramatic compression and accesibility for a first
timer (plus it's on one CD) have you tried Purcell's Dido and Aneas?
